Circuit of The Americas was invited to discuss its sustainability programs at the FIM’s (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) inaugural Women + Sustainability in Motorcycling Conference on November 19 & 20, 2015, in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. The conference brought together 25 international experts on gender and sustainability in motorcycling, two key areas that the FIM deems vital to the future of the sport. Nearly 300 attendees gathered in Spain to engage in discussions, network and share ideas.

Edgar Farrera, COTA’s Director of Sustainability, represented the Circuit and participated in a panel discussion about the FIM’s ongoing “Keep it Shiny and Sustainable” program that aims to manage sporting events to minimize their environmental impact. COTA participated in the program during the 2014 and 2015 MotoGP events in Austin to great success. COTA’s efforts to make the MotoGP event green included increased resource recovery efforts (recycling and composting), carbon offsetting and increasing fan awareness of environmental issues through special appearances by FIM eco-ambassadors Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. During the 2014 event, Rossi participated in a ceremony intended to raise awareness about environmental stewardship at major sporting events, and in 2015 Marquez planted a native tree at COTA in COTA’s Garden of Champions near the Main Grandstand.

COTA is the FIM’s 2014 Environmental Award Co-Winner (along with Yamaha), and the 2015 award winner was announced at the Women + Sustainability in Motorcycling Conference. This year the award went to the Motorcycling Federation of Andorra and the inaugural Women in Motorcycling Award was conferred to Motorcycling Victoria (Australia) for their successful Women Participation Program, which aims to increase the number of female participants in 2 wheel racing.

Summing up Kattia Hernandez – FIM International Environment Commission Director, “It has been beyond our expectations. Our panelists have been fantastic, we have learnt so much from them and they have also inspired the audiences that in turn has created an incredible level of interaction from all the parties who have attended.”
